Feel inspired by nature. Do work with your hands. Create functional art.
We all have an innate desire to collaborate with nature to create something of meaning - something beautiful and functional. The more basic the tools and materials used, the more satisfying the process and results.
Our workshops are taught by skilled craftsmen with contagious passion for their work. You'll feel empowered and connected, inspired and supported as you create something timeless.
At this time (spring 2019) we are focused on launching our website and building out our catalog. We have some great workshop ideas that we are excited to share with you soon. Until then, below are some sample offerings. Please be sure to sign up for our newsletter and follow us on social media.
In this three day course you will learn how to build a set of heavy duty saw horses that will be the foundation you build upon in your future timber framing projects. This project is a great way to start down your timber framing path. Building the saw horses will introduce you to many of the key elements of this traditional building technique.
We'll begin with local spruce logs and mill them to dimension on our saw mill. You'll learn basic layout and joinery cutting to create the traditional mortise and tenon joints.
This is your chance to join us in the place we go for inspiration - Alaska's rugged wilderness coastline. Alaskan Viking founder, Scott Dickerson, will be your captain aboard the m/v Milo as we visit some of the most dramatic landscapes Alaska has to offer. This five day trip around the outer coast of the Kenai Peninsula will include world class beachcombing and you'll have the opportunity to build a piece of furniture from unique pieces of driftwood, stone, metal, or buoys gathered. Other activities include paddleboarding, surfing, glacier viewing, fishing, hiking and eating great food.
This workshop is offered in collaboration with Ocean Swell Ventures.
Here at the Alaskan Viking Company we love to salvage, reclaim, recycle, repurpose and generally reimagine what an old piece of wood could be.
Working with this material presents some unique challenges. We've learned a few tricks working with old beams, driftwood, salvaged fences, crooked trees and the like. Now we'd like to share some of this knowledge with you to help your weathered wood dreams come true too.
Please share your wishes, ideas, dreams with us as we develop our workshops.
